Physical Therapy Schools

Physical therapy schools are specialized institutes where education on the medical subjects, regarding the normal physical movements of body, is imparted to the potential physical therapists. It is a starting point for those who decide to adopt physical therapy as a career. Before talking more of physical therapy schools, it is important to know that what physical therapy is.

Physical therapy, commonly known as physiotherapy, is the medical name for the methods used in treating persons who are having problems related to body movements due to any reason. It focuses on treating musculoskeletal system; bones’, joints’, tendons’, muscles’ and ligaments’ interaction s with the physical movements. The origin of this methodology can be traced down to 460 BC when the Hippocrates favored massage and Hectors advocated hydrotherapy, a water therapy. The earliest documented origins of the physical therapy, as a professional field, date back to 1894 – England.

After this, a remarkable growth was observed in this field, especially in the west. Physical therapists started going afar the hospitals. Today, therapists work in public, universities/colleges, rehabilitation centers, orthopedic clinics, medical centers, and even as a separate wing. With every passing year the scope of physical therapy widened, which eventually resulted in the establishment of physical therapy schools, where potential therapists can be educated and trained.

The main aim of a physical therapy institute is to enable their students to heal human body after trauma, and to guide them on how to save themselves from future injuries. Students are trained to script exercise procedures and most precisely foresee possible relapses, diagnose the sources of pain and discomfort. The techniques of electrical stimulation, hot and cold compression and even ultrasounds are also a part of the core curriculum. Experience work and clinical tasks training is part of the physical therapy program. This gives them an awareness of the real practice and when they start with their practices individually, they feel confident.

General Pre requisites for applying in a physical therapy school are mathematics and physiology in high school. Having a mathematic background is necessary here. Then comes a stage, when you have to select the most appropriate and best physical therapy schools. It is important to choose wisely because acquiring education from a well-reputed institute would give you an edge over others in the end. The criterions like score, tests etc vary from on institute to other. While choosing physical therapy schools for you the first thing is a good accreditation. Other influencing factors can be the location, courses being offered, costs etc. A well-reputed institute would obviously cost more.

Those who pass out from physical therapy schools are expected to hold at least a master’s degree in physical therapy. It is a 2 years program and consists of multiples courses. It is not an easy study so while you prepare yourself for a physical therapy school, keep it in mind that you have to work hard.

A master’s degree in physical therapy is necessary for the individuals who want to be a physical therapist. It is also a training center for those who want to serve the humanity either by revitalizing people to get back to their work or assisting them to live an independent life on their own feet. Since there are short, training courses offered by in these institutions and guidelines on rehabilitation of people are given. However, successfully passing out from a physical therapy school is not everyone’s cup of cake. It offers up to a full doctorate program. The scope of doctorate is evidently more than that of masters. The subjects taught in a physical therapy school are biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, biomechanics, neuroanatomical etc. At the senior stage of the degree, clinical classes are also given in which students are trained about examinations, tests, protocols etc.

Once the students pass out from the physical therapist schools, most of them work with different hospitals and orthopedic clinics. Without practice, a physical therapist cannot make his way to a successful career. For this purpose they need to work in hospitals, orthopedic clinics etc. This way they get a chance to implement their knowledge, gain experience as they work with experienced doctors, and meanwhile create goodwill too. This experience and goodwill helps them in attracting patients. Because it is kind of a field, in which experience matters more than anything else does. Another factor that will affect the growth of an individual as a physical therapist is; marketing. Good marketing will create awareness of your work among the masses.

Precisely, the field of physical therapy is still young. It has demand and scope, as there are not many of the therapists in the market. Unlike a few decades back, today it is no more difficult to be a physical therapist as there are many physical therapy schools round the globe.
